Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and can also be a great source of comfort to you. Helping others makes us feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of pride. There are many opportunities in your neighborhood for you to pitch in and help out with.

When seeking volunteering opportunities in your community, start by thinking about what you’re good at. If you like to cook, you can help out at a soup kitchen. If you’re good with kids, you can volunteer at a school or community center. If you like taking care of people, you can volunteer at a hospital. There are several possibilities to choose from. All you have to do is pick one.

Once you decide where you’d like to volunteer, contact that business’ volunteer service coordinator to set up a meeting. Talk with them about what you’d like to do, and what kind of time you can give them. Then make up a schedule that works for both of you. If you’re not sure what kind of volunteering opportunities there are in your neighborhood, you can locate some on Volunteer Match’s website. This organization helps you find a volunteer placement that’s right for you.

One type of volunteer work you may not have thought of is volunteering outside of your community. Organizations like the Red Cross need a lot of volunteers who are willing to travel around the country, and even around the world, where their help is needed.
