Volunteering your time to help others is the most selfless gift you can give. Taking the time out of your life to assist someone in need is the ultimate form of “pay it forward.” You get the heartfelt satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped an individual or family out of a bad situation, they receive the benefit of your time and assistance.
Part of human nature is the desire to help others. It brings a feeling that we are all part of something bigger than us, sometimes called being of the greater good.
Up until recent times, people lived together in large family groups. Helping each other out was a way of life, something family members did to make life easier for each other in any way they could. Being selfless was a way of life, something that most did not give any thought to.
Modern life has taken us away from the large family lifestyle. Instead, people spread out across the map and don’t always have the sense of community. Volunteering for an organization that does good for those who have little or nothing fills that void. Everyone comes together for a few days, forms camaraderie’s with those in need, those who are helping, and completes a task that makes life easier for those who are without.
The whole purpose of volunteering is to give, not receive. And giving something of oneself feeds the sense of self-worth. But no one ever wants anything from those who they helped. Instead, payment comes in the form of seeing those who were helped, help others.
